In the midst of it all

November 10th, 2009 · No Comments · Moments/Contemplations

In the midst of it all, bills to be paid, jobs to be juggled, commitments to be honored, challenges to be faced, do you ever stop in wonder why? Why am I doing this, where is it all leading, what do I do it all for? Most of us at some point particularly as we approach our late 40’s and 50’s find what once gave our lives meaning is no longer applicable. We often find ourselves reflecting about the way we live our lives and the what we want from life.

Words like purpose, fulfillment and peace start popping up. The doing no longer seems as important as the being. How we see ourselves shifts the ruler we use to measure ourselves by begins to seems outdated and irrelevant.

It is almost as if we are pushed out of our heads and into our hearts. A restlessness develops the big questions sit on our lips:

Who am I?

What do I want the rest of my life to look like?

What is important what is not?

A lot of us are at the stage where we are faced with our own mortality. The things of youth have slipped away and we wake up and think how did I get here and what am I going to do now I am here?

Ultimately as we struggle with the big questions the little things become more important. Did I hug my partner today? Did I tell my children how proud of them I am? When was the last time I laughed out loud? It is almost as if we close the circle of life and return to where we started. As a child who lives only for the moment, finding joy in the smallest of things, letting go rather than holding on of emotions, feelings moving on to the next thing. A child whose focus is on what they are doing right now not what they should be doing next week. A child who has no judgments no hang ups no preconceived notions of how things ought to be and no expectations to pull down the excitement of new things, change.

In the midst of it all perhaps peace comes by letting go of all the big questions and allowing ourselves to experience the little things.
